Aldi Wagyu Beef Steak – Review

ALDI WAGYU BEEF (3)

I’d read a lot of articles this week about Aldi selling Wagyu beef, the most expensive steak in the world, I’m lead to believe, for the bargain price of £7.29! I only live 2 minutes away from an Aldi, and knowing that I would never be able to afford a Wagyu beef steak in a restaurant (£90 for the same size steak in upmarket places), I decided to have a go at cooking some myself.

Aldi are selling two cuts of Wagyu, sirloin and ribeye – we went for the ribeye as I think the sirloin had already sold out!

The beef comes from cattle that has been bred and grass-fed on open New Zealand pastures, according to the retailer.

It has a “good coverage of marbling” which helps make the meat more tender and succulent when the fat melts into it.

There’s a limit to 2 steaks per customer as stock is very limited. If you fancy trying some yourself be very quick!

We kept the accompanying ingredients simple, oven chips (sorry mum), cherry tomatoes, and large flat mushrooms – and a bottle of Aldi’s Malbec for good measure, obviously.

I’ll admit I’m no expert at cooking steak, but watched a few Youtube videos to get some good tips on how to get it right. Your methods may vary, but this is how I did it and it turned out quite well.

Firstly take the Wagyu beef steak out of the packaging and leave it out on the side for 30 minutes so it reaches room temperature. Then season with sea salt and black pepper and rub on a little bit of oil.

HOW TO COOK MEDIUM RARE STEAK

Shove your chips in a pre-heated oven and get them going.

OVEN CHIPS

Chop up your toms and mushrooms, I roasted mine as it was easier to just put them in with the chips when they had about 10 mins left to cook.

Then flip them over and cook the other side for another minute.

Turn the heat down to a moderate level and cook for a further 90 secs on each side if your like it rare, or 3 minutes on each side if you prefer your steaks well done.

ALDI STEAK - FATHERS DAY

Once they’re cooked to your liking, take them out of the pan and leave them to rest for 3-5 mins so the meat relaxes as it tenses up during cooking.

Meanwhile bring out your toms, mushrooms and chips and assemble the rest of your plate

And enjoy! Having never tried any Wagyu beef before I must admit I was very impressed. It really melted in the mouth and had a texture more of lightly cooked cod rather than steak. I’d definitely recommend trying it if you can get your hands on one. It’d make a great gift for Father’s Day if your dad is a big steak fan, it’s not every day you can try the world’s most expensive steak for £7.29.

Just watch out for envious glances from those who didn’t manage to buy one!

Don’t worry she did get to try some in the end, I’m not that mean!
